The government of Javier Milei has ordered the Argentine delegation to withdraw from the negotiations at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29, taking place in Azerbaijan. This decision is framed within the rejection of the "2030 agenda" of the libertarian administration, which generates discomfort among companies operating in the country and promoting cleaner production.
The negotiations at COP29 focus on climate financing and the need to increase resources that developed countries allocate for adaptation and mitigation of climate change. Despite this withdrawal, Argentina does not abandon the Paris Agreement to combat global warming, as this process of disengagement is more extensive and takes about a year.
It is expected that Donald Trump will carry out his withdrawal when he assumes the presidency of the United States in January; however, a small Argentine delegation received the order to suspend their agenda and return to Buenos Aires immediately. According to reports, the Argentine representatives left the summit to avoid endorsing the decisions made there.
The summit will continue until Friday, the 22nd, with the presence of leaders and presidents, although it will no longer have Argentine representation. At the opening of the conference, Simón Stiell, the UN official on climate issues, urged the demonstration that global cooperation is up to the demands of the moment.
